The Greek island of Crete is one of the first potential regions where locals found a way to domesticate the wild olive tree in prehistoric times.
In the Kolymvari region and in the village of “Ano Vouves” grows one of the oldest domesticated olive trees, the “Monumental Οlive Τree of Vouves”.
It is considered one of the oldest olive trees in the world, with an estimated age of at least 2,500 years.
Cretans consume about 82 grams of olive oil per day, or 30 kg per year.
